Spain’s Iberia Suspends Direct Flights to Cuba Amid Fuel Crisis
“The situation that the country has been facing in recent months has greatly impacted demand,” a spokesperson told Spanish media.
Cuba has been grappling with severe disruptions, including widespread electricity outages and persistent food shortages, following what authorities describe as an energy blockade imposed by the United States earlier this year.
The deteriorating conditions have also affected aviation operations, with several North American and European carriers scaling back or suspending routes due to limited jet fuel availability at international airports across the island.
In response to the shortages, Iberia had already been forced to make technical refueling stops in Santo Domingo on return journeys to Madrid, complicating operations and increasing costs.
According to the revised schedule, the airline will maintain three weekly flights between Madrid and Havana in April, before cutting frequencies to two per week in May and fully suspending the route in June.
Despite the suspension, travelers will still be able to reach Cuba via alternative routes, including connections through Panama under a codeshare agreement with Copa Airlines.
Tourism data shows that in 2024, Canada remained the leading source of visitors to Cuba, followed by Russia, the United States, Germany, Spain, and Mexico, reflecting shifting travel patterns amid ongoing disruptions.
